Watch as Jay Leno Gets Matt Damon to Re-Create a 1965 Road & Track Cover
  • ford v ferrari is an upcoming film about the ford and ferrari le mans rivalry from the mid-1960s.
  • the movie stars matt damon as carroll shelby and christian bale as ken miles.
  • jay leno didn't only pose damon for the cover shot; they also talked about the history of le mans racing and what it was like making the movie.

we have been looking forward to the upcoming movie ford v ferrari, which stars matt damon as carroll shelby and christian bale as ken miles. so we were interested to see what automotive enthusiast and tv personality jay leno asked matt damon about the history of le mans in the runup to the movie's debut on november 15.

matt damon showed up at jay leno's garage in a shelby cobra and parked next to a shelby gt350 and a modern ford gt. jay then asked matt to pose for a photo, which, it turned out, was intended to re-create the may 1965 cover of road & track that depicts carroll shelby standing with two shelbys and a gt40.

when talking about the race scenes in the movie, damon said that none of the crashes in the film were cgi. jay leno says he once asked carroll shelby what he didn't like about enzo ferrari, and his response was that he killed too many drivers. another cool thing we learned about the movie in this clip is that a few drivers were played by their sons in the movie, dan gurney's son alex being one of them.

the two lead actors never had the chance to meet the legends they play in the movie, but damon says he learned how to portray shelby through watching old documentaries. it must have worked: in appreciation for his portrayal, the shelby family asked jay to give damon one of 300 coins that carroll's son had made in memory of his late father.

(just a side note to jay leno: car and driver has magazine covers. lots and lots of them. more than 60 years' worth.)
