ford announced today that reservations for the limited mustang mach-e first edition, which starts at $61,000 and is slated to arrive in late 2020, have all been taken. the select, premium, california route 1, and higher-performance gt models are still available for pre-order.
the first edition models come only with all-wheel drive and the extended-range battery. this version stands out with first edition badging, red brake calipers, metallic pedal covers, and red stitching in the interior, which ford points out is vegan. according to ford, 38 percent of first edition customers selected carbonized gray, 35 percent chose grabber blue metallic, and 27 percent opted for rapid red.
more than 25 percent of reservations for the mach-e are from california, ford says. overall, 30 percent of u.s. customers are choosing the higher-performing gt variants, with a claimed 459 horsepower and 612 lb-ft of torque, which are slated to arrive in early 2021. and more than 80 percent of customers selected the extended-range battery, either a $5000 option with rear-wheel drive or $7700 with all-wheel drive on the premium models over the standard-range pack.
rear-wheel-drive mustang mach-es boast slightly longer estimated ranges, although 55 percent of mach-e reservations have been spec'd with all-wheel-drive platforms, says ford. we asked for details on why ford is claiming less range for all-wheel-drive models than rear-wheel-drive versions; a ford spokesperson told c/d that it's because the extra etransaxle (secondary drive unit) in the system has "associated parasitic losses" but also said the system is optimized for all-wheel-drive performance and that choosing all-wheel drive will have "minimal overall" impact on the mach-e's range.
