the 2019 gx 460 is one of lexus' older models and one of the dwindling number of truck-based suvs on the market. reviewer joe wiesenfelder took on the task of finding out if the gx 460 still holds its own in the modern suv market, including on a lengthy trip from chicago to detroit and back.
what did wiesenfelder find out during his time with the big — but not biggest — lexus suv? for starters, the gx is a series of trade-offs. being truck-based has its advantages, like towing capacity and off-road capability, but disadvantages like poorer on-road ride quality and manners. the most interesting compromise, however, has to do with the gx's age.
"add this to my growing list of backhanded compliments: the gx is old enough that its multimedia system isn't maddening," wiesenfelder gratefully writes. "almost all lexuses have a display in their dashboard controlled by remote touch interface: a mouselike device or touchpad on the center console. despite their years of revisions, we just don't like it, and we're not alone. the gx, however, has a simple touchscreen and — again, because it's older — doesn't incorporate the controls for too many essential features."
