we got a look at the subaru levorg at the tokyo auto show last fall, although, sadly, this sporty station wagon, like most sporty station wagons sold overseas, isn't going to make its way to u.s. shores. and now subaru is rubbing it in our face, as it just unveiled the even sportier levorg sti sport at the tokyo auto salon.
this sti-ified wagon is just a new prototype for now, though subaru has been selling first-generation levorg stis for the last few years—except in the u.s. the coolest thing about this prototype is that it's the first subie to be equipped with electronically controlled dampers. it also has multiple drive modes that adjust the engine, steering, dampers, and all-wheel-drive system.
while we don't know much yet about the levorg sti sport's powertrain, we can expect that it'll use a higher-output version of the newly developed turbocharged 1.8-liter flat-four engine that'll power the recently announced second-generation levorg. subaru says it'll be a torquey four-banger but didn't give exact numbers.
the subaru levorg sti sport is on display at the tokyo auto salon this weekend, and it's the beginning of subaru's "grand touring philosophy" and, the automaker says, will further the progress of subaru tecnica international. we just hope it brings that philosophical knowledge to our shores.
subaru says the second-gen levorg will hit the japan market in the second half of 2020, so the sti sport version will likely arrive sometime early next year.
