as we've already pointed out, audi has made substantive improvements to the a5 and s5 for the 2020 model year. what's new, though, is that every variant costs less and looks better.
because audi's glacial evolution keeps the original 2008 a5 coupe so fresh on the outside, the 2020 models don't ruin a good thing. like the a4 sedan, the a5 coupe and four-door sportback get angrier in the face with widened headlights and a blacked-out honeycomb grille that replaces the shiny chrome bars. the outer intakes (mostly blocked off with plastic) and the grille feature thick silver finishers, which mirror the trim on the revised rear bumper with protruding trapezoids replacing the circular exhaust tips. together with a flat chin spoiler below the grille and three thin inlets at the very top of the grille, the rs style is very much in effect. the a5 cabriolet's lower fascia is much softer and simpler, without as many intersecting body panels.
if you order the led matrix headlights, they'll play an animation sequence when unlocking or locking the car, and the front turn signals are now sequential. a deep district green and a bright turbo blue are two new colors every a5 buyer should consider. powertrains remain the same. there's a 2.0-liter turbo four and seven-speed dual-clutch automatic in the a5 or a 3.0-liter turbo v-6 and eight-speed automatic for the s5, both paired with quattro all-wheel drive.
modern life means big displays, in this case a 10-inch touchscreen that deletes the rotary controller on the center console. audi claims this mib 3 system is 10 times faster than the mib 2 system in the 2019 model and offers a voice assistant like those first used by mercedes-benz and bmw. other than that, the a5 and sportier s5 models are exactly as they were. except on price.
the 2020 a5 coupe, convertible, and sportback cost $1300 less than the 2019 models, at $43,895. the s5 coupe and sportback are down $500, at $52,895, while the s5 convertible—apparently the slow seller of the bunch—offers a $3400 discount for $61,195. look for them later this winter.
