  • ram announced during an ev day event held by its parent company, stellantis, that it is planning an ev version of the 1500 pickup for 2024.
  • the brand, which also builds heavy-duty trucks and cargo vans, says it will have an ev in most of its segments by 2025, and in all of its segments by 2030.
  • the announcement also referenced plug-in hybrid technology, but did not specify which models might receive that treatment.

ram announced today that it will join its pickup-war rivals, ford and general motors, in building an electric version of its full-size pickup truck. in an announcement during parent-company stellantis' ev day, ram said it would produce a 1500 ev in 2024 using a body-on-frame electric vehicle platform that it claims will have 500 miles of driving range. ram also said it would offer an ev version in every segment it serves—which presently includes heavy-duty trucks, city vans, and cargo vans—by 2030.

details on the ev 1500 are slim, which is not unusual given the long time horizon. in a pre-taped video, ram brand ceo mike koval stood in front of five draped vehicles that seem to represent one large van, one small van, and three pickups of varying sizes, and promised that ram's evs would surpass not only customers' expectations, but also the promises made by its rivals about their ev trucks.

those promises include an ev f-150 with standard all-wheel drive, up to 300 miles of range, and up to 10,000 pounds of towing capacity (ford hasn't made any promises about range while towing). we know a lot less about chevrolet's promised ev silverado, but gm has said that truck will have 400 miles of range and we expect it to go on sale in 2023 or 2024.

ram's announcement didn't mention specific towing numbers, but on top of the promised 500 miles of range (which would significantly improve on even the longest-range evs currently on the market), kovals said the 1500 ev would offer on-board power, the ability to accept fast-charging rates of up to 150 kwh, advanced automated driving technology, and a navigation system that can help drivers plan routes based on their vehicle's predicted range and the availability of charging stations. the video also hinted at plug-in hybrid rams, though it didn't say which models would employ that technology.

koval closed the video by insisting that ram is not following in the footsteps of competitors who have already announced ev pickups, but that by entering the market after ford and gm's trucks are scheduled to arrive, ram will be able to benchmark those cars and improve upon them. it wouldn't be the first time ram had come from behind with an impressive product, but it's worth noting that by the time ram's first ev launches in 2024, ford will almost certainly be deep in the development of its second-generation f-150 ev.
