we reported earlier this month that porsche and lucasfilm will be partnering up for the new movie star wars: rise of skywalker. our first thought was: could a star wars–themed taycan be in the works? well, this isn’t that, but we did get something pretty cool out of the deal. the creators of the electric sports sedan and the star wars franchise have been meeting and are designing a starship together that will "have a future role to play in the star wars galaxy," according to porsche.
lucasfilm creative director doug chiang says that the design will be a recipe featuring ingredients from the x-wing, y-wing, and u-wing starships from the star wars movies, combined with pieces of taycan design. the designers were given specific instructions: there must be two front entries, a large rear cargo door, and room for two pilots and a maximum of five crew members. it also needs to have a minimum of two and a maximum of four engines, the company said.
the spaceship will be shown off at the star wars: rise of skywalker premiere in december alongside porsche’s very own spaceship: the 2020 taycan. in case you didn’t know, the taycan's first syllable is pronounced just like the "tie" in tie fighter, which is the single-seater starship that pretty much signals the impending doom that is the imperial fleet. basically the same thing as a sub-three-second zero-to-60-mph electric sports sedan, right?
star wars: rise of skywalker is set to premiere on december 20. the taycan launched in early september and u.s. deliveries will start at the end of the year, just in time for the premiere.
