Porsche 911s New Aerokit Is a Preview for the 992 GT3

Porsche 911s New Aerokit Is a Preview for the 992 GT3

  • a new aerokit is now available as a cosmetic upgrade for all 992-generation porsche 911 coupes.
  • new sportdesign bumpers change up the 911's look, too.
  • the next-gen 911 gt3 is still a year or more away, although porsche showed a preview of it in this year's super bowl ad.

we're not yet worthy of a new 911 gt3, not until porsche milks the outgoing 991.2-generation models for what they're worth. but while we wait for the new 992 gt3 to arrive, the 992 now offers the next best thing—a big old wing.

returning to porsche's configurator is the aerokit, the classic way to pose as a gt3 owner without actually paying full price to be one. for $6910, porsche deletes the retractable spoiler for a fixed, nearly foot-tall wing in two sections. like the outgoing gt3, the lower part acts like a large ducktail spoiler sandwiched between struts, which hold the mighty wing that produces the majority of the aerokit's unspecified increase in downforce and drag. it's much thinner than the actual gt3's wing and certainly not at the steroidal level seen on 992 gt3 prototypes since 2018. but yes, it is functional.

more telling is where the dmv screws itself into your car. porsche shifted the license-plate mount to the upper portion of the bumper—like where the 991.2's plate sits—so it could reroute airflow to the bottom portion between the exhaust pipes. check out the difference above.

you'll also notice blacked-out trim for the lower bumper finish and l-shaped body-color inserts next to each exhaust outlet. the front bumper divides the all-black lower intakes into three distinct sections with a body-color chin spoiler and elongated air intake moldings at either side. if you love the bumpers and dislike the wing, check the sportdesign package for $4890. a further option for aerokit and sportdesign styles is to paint the rocker panels body color for another $1290.

porsche did offer an even better preview of the new gt3 recently, as it made a brief appearance during the company's ad during the super bowl earlier this month. it, too, has a fixed rear wing, but a different one than the aerokit wing. that's because the upcoming gt3 will be the real deal, rather than just the appearance of the real deal. hopefully you're already on the waiting list for one at your local dealer already.
