- porsche announced that the new 718 cayman and boxster gts will be powered by a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six.
- it's a slightly less powerful version of the six-cylinder that powers the new cayman gt4 and boxster spyder. it makes 394 horsepower and 309 lb-ft of torque.
- we expect that it'll start at just shy of $90,000 when it becomes available for order in summer 2020.
while the turbocharged flat-four in the porsche 718 boxster and cayman helps them accelerate harder than the previous six-cylinder cars, we still miss the flat-six that it replaced. so we were ecstatic to learn about the new gts 4.0 versions of the 718 boxster and cayman that will be powered by a naturally aspirated flat-six once again.
porsche says this engine is closely related to the flat-six found in the new cayman gt4 and boxster spyder, though it makes less power in the gts 4.0. it spins up 394 horsepower and 309 lb-ft in this application, 20 hp less and the same amount of torque than in the gt4 and spyder. essentially, this engine is the 992-generation 911’s 3.0-liter flat-six, though porsche bores and strokes it out to 4.0 liters and rips off the turbos.
like its more powerful brethren, the gts 4.0 can only be had with a six-speed manual transmission and comes standard with a sport exhaust system, which will provide some deafening 7,800-rpm shrieks. the sport chrono package, which includes torque vectoring with a mechanical limited-slip differential, is also standard.
the gts 4.0's ride height is 0.8 inch lower than the standard 718 boxster and cayman models. it's fitted with 20-inch black wheels, and because of the increased power output of the new 4.0-liter engine, the brake rotors are now bigger, measuring 13.8 inches in the front and 13 inches in the rear, and have six-piston calipers that are painted red. porsche's ceramic composite brakes are also available.
like previous gts models, the gts 4.0 has black trim on the exterior and tinted tail lights. the interior is wrapped in alcantara and has plenty of carbon-fiber trim, and a gts interior package is available with carmine red or chalk trim for the tachometer, seat belts, and stitching.
we expect that the porsche 718 cayman gts 4.0 will start around $87,000 and the boxster gts 4.0 will start at just under $90,000. that's about $10,000 less than the slightly more powerful 718 cayman gt4 and boxster spyder, which will start at $100,450 and $97,550 when they arrive in the spring. the gts 4.0 will be available to order in summer 2020 and we expect it to arrive in the u.s. either late 2020 or early in 2021.
