  • the polestar 2's starting price is lower than originally announced, making it eligible for more tax incentives in certain states including new york and california.
  • it starts at $61,200 and the optional performance package with ohlins suspension and upgraded brembo brakes is an additional $5000.
  • the polestar 2 began production in march and will be delivered to u.s. customers beginning this summer.

the polestar 2 has a new starting price of $61,200, a drop of $1800 compared with the previously announced base price of $63,000. without the mandatory destination fee, the electric vehicle's msrp now sits just under $60,000, an important number for certain state incentive programs. so the first ev from volvo's performance electric subbrand will not only cost less but will also now be eligible for clean-vehicle incentives from states such as new york and california.

in addition to federal tax credits for purchasing energy-efficient vehicles, individual states also offer incentives. for states including new york and california, there is a cap on the cost of the vehicle. if it’s priced at above $60,000, the purchase doesn’t qualify. getting the polestar 2's msrp just under that number means new owners can get up to an additional $2000 in incentives.

polestar says deliveries will start this summer in the u.s. for reservation holders. in addition to selling its cars online, polestar will be opening showrooms called polestar spaces. the showrooms will be more like an apple store than a traditional dealership with non-commissioned staff answering questions and scheduling test drives. the first polestar spaces will open in late summer 2020 on the west coast and in new york.

polestar also announced new option pricing. the performance package consisting of a more aggressive ohlins suspension setup, upgraded brembo brakes, and new wheels and tires will set you back $5000. a nappa leather interior is an additional $4000. metallic paint options and 20-inch alloy wheels (instead of the standard 19-inch wheels) will each cost $1200.

the polestar 2 four-door hatchback is the first battery-electric ev from the new automaker, following the plug-in-hybrid, low-volume polestar 1 coupe. the polestar 2 has a targeted driving range of 275 miles from a 78.0-kwh battery pack and will be the first production vehicle equipped with an infotainment system powered by google’s android automotive system.
