- nissan's motorsports team teamed up with ma motorsport to build this frontier desert runner off-road race truck for sema.
- it's powered by the same 5.6-liter v-8 found in the titan, though this one is turbocharged, paired with a six-speed manual transmission, and upgraded to produce 600 horsepower and 700 lb-ft of torque.
- the desert runner off-road racer features high-clearance bumpers, bfgoodrich off-road tires, king triple-bypass shocks, and a custom spare tire carrier in the bed.
the 2020 nissan frontier is the oldest car in continuous production for sale in the united states—it's been 16 years, and it's still popular. in all that time, nissan's mid-size pickup has been offered as a production model with four or six cylinders, but never a v-8. for the sema show, nissan is putting eight cylinders at the helm of a berserker frontier off-roader and pairing it with a six-speed manual gearbox.
we're familiar with the frontier desert runner, as it is one of the five trim level options for nissan’s mid-size pickup. the production version is only available with a 4.0-liter v-6, but that's not the case here. just about the only thing this crazy race variant shares with the production car is the name.
it's powered by a highly modified version of the 5.6-liter v-8 found in the titan that's turbocharged and makes 600 horsepower and 700 lb-ft of torque. nissan teamed up with ma motorsports to complete a full race-spec build with a custom intercooler and turbo header along with a modified exhaust. additional modifications include jim wolf technology camshafts, pistons, and valve springs and retainers.
the body of the frontier desert runner is also highly modified and features a custom spare-tire carrier. it retains the standard frontier grille and headlights but is fitted with custom front and rear bumpers from ma motorsports that allow for more ground clearance. fiberwerx front fenders and rear bedsides allow for massive bfgoodrich baja t/a tires that are wrapped around 17-inch fifteen52 block bronze turbomac hd wheels.
adding to the extreme ground clearance and off-road rigidity is a btf fabrication long-travel front suspension kit. king 2.5-inch triple bypass front shocks and coil-overs are installed in the front, and the rear is raised an inch higher with 3.5-inch triple bypass shocks.
the interior is full-blown race truck, although the factory dashboard is still somewhat in place. a sparco steering wheel with a quick-release adapter is installed along with sparco racing seats and harnesses.
sadly, this insane off-roader won't be available for purchase. but nissan is planning to refresh its mid-size pickup soon, and we'd love for the company to add an aggressive v-8–powered, terrain-tackling variant to its lineup to rival the ford f-150 raptor, chevrolet colorado zr2 bison, and rumored ram rebel trx.
