  • grand seiko and nissan have teamed up on a nissan skyline gt-r commemorative watch celebrating the car's 50th anniversary.
  • the watch's color scheme includes bayside (wangan) blue, a classic color from the 1999–2002 r34 generation of the skyline sports car.
  • priced at $21,000, the watch is going on sale by the end of june in a limited edition of 200.

within the whirling galaxy that is the love for all things automotive spins another constellation—the love of watches and other instruments that measure time. when these two phenomena collide, few can hope to escape their gravitational pull, and here's more proof: seiko has released a limited-edition watch based on the classic nissan skyline gt-r sports car.

grand seiko is currently celebrating the 20th anniversary of its spring drive watch technology just as nissan observes the 50th anniversary of the skyline gt-r, which made its debut in 1969. the gt-r name is coming back on a 2020 model that was revealed at the new york auto show in april.

grand seiko is incorporating design elements of the gt-r into the watch's design. the anniversary gt-r is available in three two-tone color combinations, including bayside (wangan) blue, a hue last available on the r34 generation of 1999–2002.

that handsome shade of blue is used on the watch's ceramic outer case; the inner case, made of titanium, is water resistant to a depth of 10 bar (about 330 feet). the silvery dial and the white crocodile strap accented by blue contrast stitching pay homage to the skyline gt-r's racing livery with its white stripe on the hood and roof.

while the r34 featured a twin-turbo straight-six under its hood, the watch's 9r96 automatic spring drive chronograph gmt can measure elapsed times for up to 12 hours and features a gmt function for tracking multiple time zones. the movement is visible through a sapphire-crystal case back. the oscillating weight features the gt-r anniversary emblem in 18-karat yellow gold.

grand seiko will produce 200 watches at a price of $21,000 each, with availability beginning this month.
