the lego technic ultimate series, which includes the bugatti chiron and porsche 911 gt3 rs, is getting its third model: the v-12–powered hybrid lamborghini sián (the name means "lightning"). the 1:8 scale model has 3696 pieces, working scissor doors, a lamborghini overnight bag in the frunk, and a functional eight-speed sequential gearbox with a paddle shifter inside.

lego technic designer aurelien rouffiange told car and driver that lego chose the sián as the third car in its ultimate series because of the novelty of lamborghini and the sharp, distinguished edges in the italian supercar company's design dna. with that being said, the car's exterior color is also a eye-catching lime green because lego wanted to highlight the flashiness and in-your-face looks that lamborghini is known for.

like the sián, which was unveiled at the 2019 frankfurt auto show, the lego technic model has triangular front headlights, and the model has a front trunk where builders will find a mini overnight bag. also inside the frunk is a unique-to-each-model serial number, which can be entered online to unlock special content such as a build certificate.

the model is equipped with an independent front and rear suspension, and the wheels, which are moveable via the model's steering wheel, are the same gold ones found on the production sián. like all v-12-powered lamborghini's the sián's doors open up in a scissor-like fashion, and so do the ones on the lego model. they're opened by a button on the roof, and the rear wing also extends upward via a lever next to the driver's seat.

the sián is lamborghini's first hybrid-powered supercar, and it's equipped with a 774-hp 6.5-liter v-12 engine paired with thermal and electric power, including what lamborghini claims is the world's first use of a supercapacitor in a hybrid car. the combined output is 807 horsepower that's sent to the wheels through an eight-speed sequential gearbox. lamborghini claims a zero-to-62-mph time of less than 2.8 seconds and a top speed of 218 mph.

the lego model has a meticulously laid out v-12 engine complete with the cross strut brace. it even has a fully functional eight-speed gearbox that's viewable from the underside of the model, with a working paddle shifter by the steering wheel. "technic's dna is all about the functionality and trying to get the kids to understand how it works in real life," rouffiange says.

the lego technic lamborghini sián will be available online and at lego stores starting on june 1 and then in global retailers by august 1. it'll cost $379.99.
