Jeep Wrangler, Renegade, Compass Plug-In Hybrids Will Be Called 4xe
  • jeep has announced that the upcoming plug-in-hybrid versions of the wrangler, renegade, and compass will wear a 4xe badge, as pictured above.
  • plug-in versions of the renegade and compass were already announced for europe, and we spied a prototype for the wrangler phev testing.
  • more details are coming later in 2020 at the geneva, new york, and beijing auto shows.

jeep has figured out what to call its impending lineup of plug-in hybrids: 4xe. the upcoming hybrid versions of the wrangler, renegade, and compass will be the first models to wear this new badge, pictured above. each of these will debut in 2020, although jeep hasn't yet confirmed when they will go on sale in the u.s. jeep says it will apply this badge to other future electrified suvs, as it promises that every model in its lineup will offer some sort of hybrid powertrain by 2022.

this isn't a big surprise, as we had already spotted a prototype of the wrangler phev testing, with its covered-up charging port being the main clue to its electrified powertrain. with a larger battery pack and electric motor that will enable an all-electric driving range, it will serve as a more serious hybrid option than the current wrangler's etorque hybrid powertrain option, which uses a 48-volt hybrid system that improves fuel economy slightly.

jeep also already detailed the europe-market versions of the renegade and compass plug-in hybrids, which produce a total of 240 horsepower from a turbocharged 1.3-liter inline-four gasoline engine combined with an electric motor. we don't know how those specs might change for the u.s.-market versions of these vehicles, but jeep says it will release more details at the geneva, new york, and beijing auto shows later in 2020.
