  • we've spied a v-8–powered jeep wrangler rubicon out testing with the hood from the 392 concept and a quad-tip exhaust.
  • under the hood is fca's 6.4-liter v-8 that produces 450 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque.
  • jeep says customers have been asking for a v-8 wrangler for some time now, and we hope to hear official news that it'll head to production soon.

jeep fans rejoice because jeep is serious about shoving a v-8 under the hood of the wrangler. just a week after it revealed the v-8-powered wrangler rubicon 392 concept on the day of the new ford bronco's debut, we've spotted a wrangler rubicon on the road wearing the same hood as the concept, meaning it could have hemi power.

we also noticed four exhaust pipes sticking out the back, clearly proving that it's powered by an eight-cylinder engine. that is fca's 392 hemi, which is a 6.4-liter (392 cubic inch) v-8 that produces 450 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque. it powers jeep and dodge's high-performance srt 392 models. jeep claims that the 392 concept does zero to 60 mph in less than five seconds, so the real deal should do the same.

another thing to notice is the florida plate on the back. fca does have a testing facility in florida, and it clearly did some work to cover up the "manufacturer" script at the bottom of the plate.

to fit the v-8 into the wrangler, jeep will need to upgrade the engine mounts and modify the frame. well, that's what they did to the concept. the 392 concept also had massive 37-inch mud-terrain tires—which we don't see on this test car—plus dana 44 axles, a full-time two-speed transfer case, electronic front and rear locking differentials, and a two-inch lift with upgraded fox shocks.

jeep loyalists have been asking for a v-8 wrangler for some time now, jeep says, and jim morrison, head of jeep, said that the automaker has the ability to make it happen. clearly. we hope to hear more about the v-8–powered jeep soon, and then shortly afterward perhaps ford will get jealous and throw the supercharged 5.2-liter v-8 from the gt500 in the bronco, but let's not get ahead of ourselves.
