jeep's first plug-in hybrid, the wrangler 4xe, went on sale earlier this year with a starting price of $49,490. now jeep has increased the electrified wrangler's price by $3,030, as it claims it's the best-selling plug-in-hybrid in the u.s. this price increase now makes it an $11,705 premium over a v-6 wrangler unlimited rubicon.
the wrangler 4xe is available in three models: sahara, sahara high altitude, and rubicon. the now $52,520 starting price is for the wrangler 4xe sahara, which comes with 20-inch black painted wheels on all-season tires and leather seats. the sahara high altitude, which has body-colored exterior accents, costs $58,340, and the rubicon (pictured), which has 33-inch all-terrain tires starts at $56,220.
all wrangler 4xe models use a 270-hp turbocharged inline-four paired with two electric motors drawing power from a roughly 14.0-kwh lithium-ion battery. together, they make 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. the epa estimates the wrangler 4xe at 49 mpge, and it has an electric-only mode that provides up to 21 miles of driving range.
jeep declined to comment on why it increased the wrangler 4xe's price, but it boasted that it's the best-selling plug-in hybrid right now. it sold 69,020 wranglers during the first half of this year, and while it won't disclose how many of those are the plug-in-hybrid 4xe, toyota moved 18,862 prius primes through june. there are other 4xe models on the way, jeep says, including the new grand cherokee.
