how's this for a sign of the suv-obsessed times? today during the week of festivities leading up to the annual pebble beach concours d'elegance, luxury automaker infiniti announced the name of a future vehicle joining its lineup soon, but it's not a sports car or a mega-luxury cruiser: it's the qx55 crossover.
the qx55 will wear trendy coupelike styling with a sloping roofline previewed by the profile sketch in the photo above. we can also see what looks like a long hood and muscular rear fenders. infiniti didn't offer much detail about the upcoming suv other than to name the design preview sketch, but we expect it to slot into the automaker's lineup between the compact qx50 and the mid-size, three-row qx60.
if our assumptions are correct, the qx55 would go head to head with the bmw x4 and the mercedes-benz glc coupe when it goes on sale next summer. we expect to find the qx50's variable-compression turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder under the hood, and the qx55 will likely be offered with a choice of front- or all-wheel drive. it's likely that we'll see a physical concept or perhaps even a production-ready prototype at this year's los angeles auto show in november. at that point, we'll have more details about the qx55's styling, equipment, and positioning in the infiniti lineup.
