Hyundai Austria Leaks Specs of Upcoming 2022 Ioniq 5 EV

Hyundai Austria Leaks Specs of Upcoming 2022 Ioniq 5 EV
  • hyundai's consumer website in austria leaked details about the upcoming 2022 ioniq 5 electric vehicle.
  • the site shared details about the compact hatchback's european wltp-cycle range of 280 miles, 313 horsepower, and a claimed zero-to-62-mph time of 5.2 seconds.
  • we're expecting the ioniq 5 to resemble the hyundai 45 concept vehicle and to be unveiled in early 2021.

unveiling new vehicles is a huge deal for automakers. they've worked on a product for years, and they want as much pomp and circumstance as they can muster to make the reveal of the specifications and design as exciting as possible. then a rogue web posting can put a damper on all those careful plans.

hyundai's austrian site seems to have done just that. the site yesterday launched a reservation system for the upcoming ioniq 5. the site was offering reservations for 150 of the car's first edition ahead of the unveiling, which isn’t all that weird. but it also seems to have inadvertently shared specs for the vehicle, which the korean car blog first noticed and we’ve been able to confirm using the internet archive's wayback machine.

according to hyundai's austrian site, the korean automaker is targeting a range of 280 miles on the wltp cycle for the ioniq 5. the vehicle will have all-wheel drive, make 313 horsepower, and posts a claimed zero-to-62-mph time of 5.2 seconds. the ioniq 5 ev will support dc fast charging via an 800-volt system that can recharge the battery from 20 to 80 percent in 15 minutes. the ioniq 5 will also have a solar panel roof to help keep the battery topped up.

the korean car blog reports that the first edition will have a battery capacity of 58.0 kwh, and the blog said the online chat assistant told it that a 73.0-kwh-capacity battery will be available. we were unable to confirm claims about battery capacity on the archived site.

the site also shared dimensions of the ioniq 5. at 182.3 inches, it’s about 18 inches longer than the 2020 hyundai kona, but roughly the same height at 63.0 inches. we are expecting that it will resemble the hyundai 45 concept pictured above and be unveiled in early 2021. it will be the first of a group of vehicles being built on hyundai's new e-gmp ev platform.

all this information doesn’t seem to be set in stone yet. the austrian hyundai site states, via google translate from german to english: "all information without guarantee, the data can change before the start of production."

when we reached out to hyundai motor america about the leak, a spokesperson responded, "unfortunately we cannot comment on future product."
