  • we spotted a cadillac escalade prototype testing with a quad-tip exhaust, and it could be a new high-performance model.
  • it's rumored to be a new v model powered by a supercharged 6.2-liter v-8, although cadillac said that the new ct4-v and ct5-v would be the last gas-powered v cars.
  • cadillac has also promised an electric escalade, using gm's new ultium platform, by 2025.

the cadillac escalade could be getting a high-performance model if these camouflaged prototypes with a quad-tip exhaust are any indication. the exhaust looks similar to the ct4-v and ct5-v blackwing's, but at this point it's unclear what will power this new escalade variant—or even if it will wear the v moniker. cadillac did announce that the new v blackwings will be the last gas-powered v cars, but there are often loopholes contained within these sorts of claims.

two engines are currently available on the 2021 escalade: a new turbo-diesel 3.0-liter inline-six or a 6.2-liter v-8. if this is a new v model, it could be powered by the supercharged 6.2-liter lt4 v-8 engine that makes 668 horsepower and 659 pound-feet of torque in the ct5-v blackwing. that engine would make it competitive with other super-suvs such as the 603-hp mercedes-amg gls63, which launched to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds in our testing.

the escalade prototypes seen in these spy photos are well-covered but clearly have unique bodywork and wheels and a quad-tip exhaust (the standard models have fake dual-exit exhaust pipes). both standard-wheelbase escalades and long-wheelbase escalade esv prototypes were seen testing alongside the upcoming c8 corvette z06.

an even more powerful version of cadillac's largest suv may seem at odds with the brand's pivot to evs and gm's promise to deliver 30 new electric vehicles by 2025. an electric escalade is also on its way, however, which will use gm's new ultium battery, and it'll be sold alongside the gas-powered version. plus, there's clearly a market for high-priced escalade variants: at the end of last year, almost half of new escalades sold for over $100,000, gm says.

cadillac declined to comment when car and driver asked to confirm if this escalade prototype is a new v model. hopefully we'll know more about this upcoming escalade variant soon, which could keep gas-powered vs alive longer than we thought.
