for the 2021 model year, the kia optima sedan gets a much better-looking redesign, an all-wheel-drive option, and a new name: k5. it'll start at $24,455 for the lx model, a little over $300 more than the 2020 model, and top out at $31,455 for the gt model, which will arrive later and be powered by a more potent four-cylinder engine.

the front-wheel-drive lineup starts with the $24,455 lx model. the lxs model then starts at $25,455, the gt-line at $26,355, and the ex at $28,955. the gt-line and ex models both get premium packages, which add advanced driver-assist systems and model-specific exterior tweaks and interior upgrades. they'll cost an additional $1600 for the gt-line premium package and $3400 for the ex premium package. all of these models are powered by a turbocharged 1.6-liter inline-four that produces 180 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. it's paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and the epa estimates it'll be good for 29 mpg city, 38 mpg highway, and 32 mpg combined.

one of the most exciting things about the new k5 is the addition of the all-wheel-drive platform. it's only available on the lxs and gt-line models and costs $27,555 for the lxs awd, up $2100 from the lxs with front-wheel drive, and up $3700 from the front-wheel-drive gt-line to $30,055 for the gt-line awd model. a gt-line awd special edition package is also available for $800 and adds features including a panoramic sunroof, gloss-black trim, and wolf gray exterior paint, which is normally a $445 option.

the more exciting gt model, which is powered by a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-four that spins up 290 horses and 311 lb-ft of torque, starts at $31,455. it's claimed to get to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds and is equipped with an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. it also can be equipped with a gt1 package that adds a 10.3-inch touchscreen with apple carplay and android auto, a heated steering wheel, bose premium audio, led headlights, and other interior features.

the 2021 kia k5 sedan will go on sale in the u.s. later this summer, and the higher-performance gt model will follow in the fall.
