  • instagram user kystify spotted the next-generation toyota 86 testing in ann arbor, michigan where toyota has a research and development facility.
  • the new 86 and subaru brz are expected to be powered by a 260-hp turbocharged flat-four paired with a standard six-speed manual transmission.
  • expect to hear more about the new sports cars by the end of the year after production of the current-gen is finished.

toyota and subaru are both slowly phasing out production of their shared 86 and brz rear-wheel-drive sports cars, meaning that the next-generation of the two sports cars is coming soon. toyota was seen testing what seems to be the next-gen 86 in ann arbor, michigan by instagram user kystify, and it looks like the new sports cars are going to be even more of a good thing.

they'll retain mostly the same shape, but with a more slopped, angular front end with thinner headlights and slightly larger grille, making it look pretty threatening with the more aggressive face. the test car's side profile is extremely similar to the current-gen model, but in the rear there's a glimpse of sleeker tail lights and an integrated trunk lip spoiler.

the current generation sports cars are powered by a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter flat-four that makes 205 horsepower and 156 lb-ft of torque, and they come standard with a six-speed manual transmission. it's been rumored that the new generation will use the more potent turbocharged 2.4-liter flat-four found in the subaru ascent, legacy, and outback, which would be good for around 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque. we'll be disappointed if the new cars don't come standard with a do-it-yourself gearbox.

expect to hear more about the next-gen toyota 86 and subaru brz by the end of the year when production of the current models officially ends. they should arrive in the united states sometime next year.
