  • ford is working on an upcoming suv that will serve as a smaller counterpart to the forthcoming bronco 4x4—hence the nickname, "baby bronco."
  • our spy photographers caught a glimpse of the baby bronco's production body, giving us a better look at its rear end.
  • the baby bronco will be based on the same platform as the 2020 escape and may use the name bronco scout or bronco sport.

take a gander at the exposed sheetmetal pictured above: you're looking at the rear end of the upcoming ford "baby bronco" suv, albeit in unfinished, body-in-white form. our spy photographers managed to get a shot of the new crossover's production body, which—when combined with earlier spy photos and leaked images of this new model—give us a pretty good idea of what the car will look like when it debuts in the near future.

the boxiness of the design is evident in the squared-off roofline, rear haunches, and tailgate, which is stamped with interesting-looking shapes. while the taillights are nowhere to be found, the cutouts seem to confirm the shape we saw in the leaked profile image from last year. this model's trucky silhouette will differentiate it from the more carlike escape, with which it will share underpinnings and other mechanical components. a more capable all-wheel-drive system will likely be optional to bolster its off-road chops

ford is mum on details about when we will first see the baby bronco, and the name hasn't yet been confirmed. we've heard rumors of bronco scout, bronco sport, and adventurer. we do suspect that we'll see the bronco-lite before the real-deal, body-on-frame bronco, which is scheduled to arrive sometime in 2020 as a 2021 model. stay tuned for more info to come on ford's burgeoning suv lineup over the next few months.
