ford has stopped selling its electric-vehicle home charging equipment after discovering the hardware wasn't working properly, automotive news reports. the stop-sale order for the $800 units started on february 24. the ford connected charging station is a 48-amp level 2 charging solution to go along with ford's mustang mach-e. the charging station allows owners to monitor information such as charge levels and energy consumption.
the problem is that the wall-mounted unit might register a fault in the system and stop charging unexpectedly. ford said that there is no cause for concern over damage from the malfunction. once the automaker figures out what was causing the issue in the system, the charging station will go back on sale. ford has not yet responded to car and driver's request for comment and it's unclear when and if current owners of the charging station will be able to send them back for a fix.
although the ford charging station is out of commission, the mach-e is still able to charge from any level 2 or level 1 connection. to make up for the lack of a ford charging station, automotive news reports, dealers are being directed to tell customers to buy third-party charging stations.
ford mach-e sales have quickly ramped up this year since launch, going from 238 of the evs sold in january to 3739 in february.
