Chevy Camaro ZL1 1LE to Compete in NASCARs 2020 Season
  • chevy released this rendering of the new camaro zl1 1le that will compete in nascar next season, starting in february with the daytona 500.
  • the changes are mainly cosmetic, but the new racer applies elements of the production camaro zl1 1le.
  • it's not until 2021 that nascar will launch its next generation of cars.

chevrolet announced today the camaro zl1 for the 2020 nascar cup series will be replaced with the camaro zl1 1le body and will make its debut at the daytona 500 in february.

chevy only supplied a rendering (above) since the car is still under development, and you might have to look closely to notice any significant difference. the front bumper has been completely revised, but as shown it doesn't incorporate chevy's patented flowtie.

these changes are mostly cosmetic, but jim campbell, vice president of performance and motorsports, said chevrolet applied lessons learned from the production camaro zl1 1le in creating the new 2020 cup car. it's not surprising, but still disappointing, that this rendering doesn’t offer any hints about the giant changes coming in 2021, when nascar launches its next generation nascar.

nascar is a very appropriate home for the zl1 1le; its street version, which is better suited for driving on a track, comes with a 650-hp 6.2-liter v-8. due to strict rules, the nascar camaro zl1 only makes 550 horsepower, but it's obviously a much lighter race machine.

the camaro zl1 this new car replaces made its debut by qualifying in first place, and after 200 laps finished in first at the daytona 500 in 2018, an accomplishment chevy hopes to repeat next year, this time with the zl1 1le.
