buick, in partnership with exxonmobil, is adding a pay-at-the-pump feature to its in-car marketplace feature. buick drivers will be able to locate the nearest exxonmobil gas station and then pay for fuel from inside the car without having to swipe a credit card or use a smartphone. drivers will also be able to enroll at no charge in exxonmobil's speedpass plus rewards program and earn rewards with each fill-up.
chevrolet, another arm of parent company gm, released a similar feature earlier this year for use at shell stations. gm positions buick as a more upscale, premium brand — so does this mean exxonmobil is supposed to be a more upscale gas station than shell?
once again, it's worth pointing out that the only state that still mandates full-service fill-ups — ones where a station attendant pumps the gas rather than a member of the general public — is new jersey. that means using this service may keep your wallet and smartphone in the car, but outside of the garden state, you'll still have to step outside and pump your own gas (or get a passenger to do it).
to use the pay-at-the-pump feature, buick owners (or their designated gas gopher) simply:
- press the exxonmobil icon within marketplace, which identifies the station location.
- follow the prompt to select the pump number and confirm the payment method.
- start fueling once the pump is activated.
the service is available for use now. all eligible buicks equipped with marketplace have already received an over-the-air update that added the pay-at-the-pump feature.
