following a debut of the concept x7 iperformance at the 2017 los angeles auto show and subsequent teases of camouflaged bits and prototypes undergoing testing in snow and ice, and desert environments, bmw has finally given the public a glimpse at the production x7.

still insisting on calling it a "sports activity vehicle," bmw claims the x7 will "redefine luxury." that seems. ... unlikely? unless there's a secret connection between the automaker and merriam-webster. one thing is sure: the x7 will absolutely be the flagship three-row suv that has been conspicuously absent from bmw's lineup for some time.

the production vehicle in the single image is more refined than the concept version and falls more in line with the design language of the current bmw lineup. the bugs bunny grille from the concept seems wider and less buck-toothed, and the front bumper has fewer angles. gone are the giant, vertically oriented vents, replaced with shorter, more pentagonal openings. the headlights are taller than the narrow slits that appeared on the concept, and the side mirrors are also from the bmw parts catalog instead of the concept.

bmw claimed last year that the concept's styling was 70 to 80 percent complete; based on the teaser image, it looks like the last 20 to 30 percent involved toning down the concept's futuristic appearance in favor of the current looks of bmw's suvs.

the full reveal of the new x7 will take place at some point later this year, although where or when hasn't been specified. whenever it debuts, we'll be sure to have all the details for you.
