we recently spent some time in bmw's tiny x2 and enjoyed its driving dynamics, but we found something missing: oomph. the new 2019 m35i version should fix that in a hurry.
the sport-oriented model joins the sdrive28i and xdrive28i versions, which share its turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder (228 horsepower, 258 pounds-feet of torque) with the larger x1. the m35i is a totally different beast, however, using bmw's most powerful 2.0-liter twin-turbo four cylinder; it's good for 302 hp and 332 pounds-feet of torque. bmw claims it sprints from zero-to-60 mph in 4.9 seconds, much quicker than the 28i's 6.3-second rating.
like the 28i, the 2019 bmw x2 m35i comes standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission, but it sees upgrades like m performance-specific tuning, additional transmission cooling and updated gear ratios. also standard is all-wheel drive incorporating the m sport differential, which features torsen-based limited-slip capability.
other m performance goodies include a lowered sport suspension with stiffer springs and shock absorbers, sport-tuned steering with a quicker ratio, and upgraded brakes.
outside, the m35i wears an aerodynamic body kit, cerium grey body trim and mirror caps, dual tailpipes, a rear spoiler and orbit grey 19-inch alloy wheels. inside, there's an m sport leather steering wheel with shift paddles and sport seats; upgraded m sport seats are optional.
production for the u.s. market begins in november. no word yet on pricing or a specific on-sale date, but the 2018 xdrive 28i starts at $39,395, including destination, so expect to pony up more for the m.
