  • bmw has released more details of the upcoming i4 electric sedan, including its power rating and battery information.
  • the i4 will be similar in size and shape to a 4-series gran coupe.
  • production will begin in 2021, and it should go on sale in the u.s. sometime that year.

we now know a lot more information about the upcoming bmw i4 all-electric sedan that will arrive in 2021. bmw has shared that it will be powered by a 530-hp electric motor and that its battery pack will measure around 80.0 kwh, and the company has released additional photos of an i4 prototype testing in the snow.

these specs will make the i4 a serious performer compared to other evs. bmw claims that the i4 will go from zero to 62 mph in 4.0 seconds, but we think it will be quicker than that considering that the 450-hp tesla model 3 performance we tested went from zero to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds. as for range, bmw is claiming the i4 will go 373 miles on a charge, but that's according to the european wltp testing standard that is far more optimistic than the u.s. epa range cycle. the i4 will have a charging capacity of 150 kilowatts, meaning it will be able to add around 62 miles of range in six minutes.

the i4 will be similar in size and shape to the bmw 4-series gran coupe, a four-door hatchback. in prototype form, it looks far less extreme than bmw's other i models, the i3 and i8, both of which have futuristic, oddball styling. the i4 will follow the ix3 crossover, another all-electric model that will be much closer to bmw's mainstream gas-powered models in terms of design. the ix3 is scheduled to arrive in 2020, while the i4 will begin production in 2021.
