  • bmw has revealed that it will offer fully electric versions of its x1 and 5-series.
  • the new evs round out the two models' menu of several different powertrains, along with gasoline with a 48-volt electric system, diesel, and plug-in-hybrid versions.
  • the automaker didn't divulge any specs or information as to when the vehicles would become available.

as part of bmw's goal-setting for reducing future carbon emissions both in vehicles and factories, the company has announced it will offer two more electric vehicles in the coming years, the x1 and 5-series, as it pushes to have 25 electrified models on the road by 2023. half of those 25 are to be fully electric, bmw has promised.

with this addition, both the x1 and the 5-series will be offered with four powertrain variants; the other three are gasoline with a 48-volt electric system, diesel, and plug-in hybrid versions. these product plans resemble those of the 7-series, which bmw announced earlier this year.

by the end of 2021, bmw says it will have five evs on the road—the bmw i3, i4, ix3, and inext, as well as the mini cooper se. bmw declined to comment on car and driver's question as to when the new 5-series and x1 evs will become available.

stricter emissions regulations in the european union have pushed automakers to produce more electric vehicles. after a mandate requiring a 40 percent reduction in emissions between 2007 and 2021, the eu also mandated in recent years that, by 2030, automakers must reduce emissions by 37.5 percent from 2021 levels.

the 5-series ev will be a direct competitor with vehicles such as the tesla model 3, while the x1 will go head to head with tesla's model y and other small crossovers, such as the audi e-tron.
