Alfa Romeo's future product plans may be in flux, according to a report in Automotive News Europe that two future sports cars—a revived, mid-engined 8C as well as a GTV sports coupe that was to be based on the Giulia sedan—have been sidelined in favor of a pared-down, SUV-heavy lineup. According to the report, the Italian automaker is moving away from small cars, too, discontinuing the MiTo city car and with plans to kill the compact Giulietta.
It is unclear whether this new, simplified lineup applies to Alfa's plans for the North American market. For example, the report indicates that the 4C sports car (pictured above) has been discontinued, but the Alfa Romeo spokesperson confirmed to C/D that "in North America, we continue to offer the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider, and [it] is available for order."
In place of the sports cars, according to ANE, Alfa Romeo will introduce two small SUVs, one of which has been previewed by the Tonale concept, and refresh the Giulia and Stelvio SUV for 2021. Apparently electrified powertrains are still part of the plan, as both of the new small SUVs are expected to be available with a hybrid or battery-electric setup alongside gasoline-powered variants. The Alfa spokesperson told C/D, when asked about the SUVs, that the company will not "comment on or speculate on future product plans."
