  • gmc has announced that super cruise will be available on the 2022 sierra 1500 denali.
  • super cruise is gm's hands-free advanced driver-assist system that now has automated highway lane-change assist.
  • sierra 1500s will also be able to tow a trailer while using the hands-free system.

the 2022 sierra 1500, which will receive an updated look, will be the second truck in gmc’s lineup to get gm’s super cruise, which is a hands-free advanced driver-assist system with automated highway lane-change assist. the 2022 gmc hummer ev will be the first, arriving in the fall of 2021, while the sierra pickup will add the feature on late 2022 models.

available on the top-of-the-line denali model, the sierra 1500's super cruise system will introduce a new function that allows drivers to drive hands-free while towing a trailer. a gmc spokesperson told car and driver that the feature will not be available on the hummer ev. super cruise, which can be operated on more than 200,000 miles of roads in the u.s. and canada, also now allows drivers to engage an automated lane change by using the turn-signal stalk. bmw, mercedes-benz, and tesla have similar systems.

as well as on the 2022 sierra 1500 denali, super cruise is being expanded to other vehicles in gm's portfolio including the cadillac ct4, ct5, xt6, and escalade. gm also recently announced that the 2022 chevrolet bolt euv will get super cruise—it will be the first chevy to get the technology. gmc has previously said the hummer ev will have it as standard but declined to comment on super cruise availability on other models in its and the sierra's lineup.

the sierra 1500, including the denali model, is set to get an update for the 2022 model year—the update was originally scheduled for 2021 but was delayed due to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. we recently spotted a 2022 sierra 1500 denali (pictured above) and can see a set of 22-inch wheels, and led headlights and taillights, which could be slightly different, and a reshaped grille hiding under the camouflage. we'll know more about the new trucks sometime next year.
