- we spotted a prototype of the new 2022 bmw 4-series gran coupe testing
- like before, the gran coupe will be a four-door hatchback version of the 4-series.
- bmw has confirmed that it will arrive in the u.s. in the second half of 2021.
if you didn't like the new look of the latest bmw 4-series coupe and convertible, then you won't like the new gran coupe model either. spy photos of a prototype show that this version has the same front end styling with huge vertical kidney grilles. bmw confirmed to c/d that the gran coupe is slated to arrive in the u.s. in the second half of 2021 as a 2022 model.
as before, the gran coupe will be the four-door model in the 4-series lineup. it's hard to tell from these photos, but it appears to continue with a hatchback opening in the rear that should offer more practicality compared with the 3-series sedan's trunk. despite the different greenhouse, the gc's headlights, taillights are identical to the coupe and convertible's.
expect powertrains to be shared with other 3- and 4-series models, meaning a 430i with a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four and an m440i with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six. bmw's upcoming i4 is also effectively an all-electric version of the 4-series, as a concept model revealed earlier this year confirmed that it shares its overall look with the gran coupe. bmw has never done a high-performance m4 gran coupe before, but we wouldn't rule out the possibility of such a variant given that there's a new m3 touring wagon spinoff planned for the european market.
the 4-series gran coupe's interior will also mirror that of the other 4-series models, other than its roomier hatchback setup. the sloping roofline will also likely limit rear-seat headroom compared with a standard 3-series sedan.
we should learn more about the 2022 4-series gran coupe sometime in the middle of 2021, as it's expected to arrive in the u.s. in the second half of the year.
