  • the 2021 gmc canyon at4 comes equipped with off-road-oriented features including a skid plate, a locking limited-slip differential, and special suspension tuning.
  • gmc made some changes to the 2021 canyon denali, too, including interior upgrades and exterior changes to make it look more like the sierra.
  • production of the 2021 canyon will begin later this year.

the off-road mid-size pickup segment is a hot one, and gmc is now adding a rugged at4 trim level to the 2021 canyon pickup. gmc already offers the at4 level on the acadia and full-size and medium-duty sierra, and this model essentially replaces last year's canyon all terrain.

the 2021 canyon at4 has 17-inch wheels and 31-inch goodyear wrangler duratrac tires, a specific off-road suspension setup, a skid plate, and a rear electronic locking limited slip differential. the canyon at4 also gets a larger front grille, red tow hooks, and interior bits including at4 badges embroidered on the headrests.

in addition to the at4, gmc is also making changes to the denali trim level of the canyon. although it hasn't yet released photos of the 2021 canyon denali, gmc claims the updated look will make the canyon appear more like the sierra, as it is adding 20-inch aluminum wheels, altering the grille, and adding chrome accents. inside, the denali gets nicer materials such as open-pore wood, contrasting stitching, and aluminum trim. heated and cooled front seats and a heated steering wheel are newly standard.

both the denali and at4 trim levels will come standard with the canyon's 308-hp 3.6-liter v-6 engine. that engine provides impressive acceleration for a mid-size pickup, going from zero-to-60-mph in just 6.3 seconds in our testing. a 2.8-liter turbodiesel engine with 369 lb-ft of torque is optional, and we assume that the 2.5-liter inline-four will remain the base engine on the canyon's lower trim levels.

the 2021 canyon will continue to be built alongside the chevrolet colorado in missouri and will arrive at dealerships later this year. pricing will be released closer to the start of production.
