  • spy photos of the next-generation bmw m4 show signs of what could be the rumored massive front kidney grille.
  • we have heard that the next-generation m4 will use the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six that's found in the x3 m and x4 m, making up to 500 horsepower.
  • the m4 could arrive as soon as next year alongside the new m3.

at the 2019 frankfurt auto show, bmw showed us the concept 4 with its large, mouthy waffle-iron grille to hype up what the next-generation 4-series will look like. if you've seen the size of the current-generation 7-series' and x7's grille, you know that bmw is not afraid of blowing up its historic kidney grille on its production cars. from these spy photos of the 2021 m4, we're more than certain that the next-gen 4-series will have a big mouth.

bmw was sure to hide most of what will be the new m4 coupe, but in trying to cover up what will likely be the large kidney grille, it left a lower part of the left kidney somewhat exposed with black mesh covering. does the engine really need that much cooling?

we've heard that the next-generation m3 and m4 will be powered by the same twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine found in the x3 m and x4 m, which both rocketed to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds in our testing. it's also reported that a purist model with rear-wheel drive and a manual transmission will be offered.

we should expect to hear more about the m4 soon because the m3 is expected to make its debut in the next few months before going on sale sometime in 2020 as a 2021 model.
