  • we spied the upcoming 2021 bmw i4 electric sedan testing its charging capabilities.
  • now that the wild-looking concept has made its transition into reality, we can see that it'll look more like the 3-series on which it's based.
  • the i4 will be equipped with a roughly 80.0-kwh battery pack and a 530-hp electric motor on the rear axle that will help it reach its epa-estimated a range of 270 miles.

the 2021 bmw i4 is aimed to be the brand's answer to the tesla model 3, and it will be based on the popular 3-series sedan. the concept car we saw in march, however, didn't look much like the 3-series. it featured jagged, futuristic angles and a gargantuan, buck-toothed kidney grille. we spied the production-ready i4 testing its charging capabilities, though, and can see that it'll look more like a standard 3-series sedan.

here, we can see that the overall shape of the i4 will be quite similar to that of the 2020 3-series and 4-series sedans. up front, and behind the camouflage, we can see that it will have a larger front kidney grille, which is no surprise considering the latest grilles on the x7 and 7-series sedan. the headlights and taillights are similar to those on the latest 3-series.

the i4 will be equipped with a roughly 80.0-kwh battery pack. bmw claims it will achieve 372 miles of range on the european wltp cycle, while the epa estimates a range of 270 miles. but when the i4 enters production, we'll put it through our 200-mile highway fuel-economy test to determine its real-world driving range. a 530-hp motor placed in the rear axle will power the i4, and bmw claims it'll reach 60 mph in around 4.0 seconds.

an onboard charger will support up to 150 kw of fast-charging capability, which should help get the battery to an 80 percent charge in about 35 minutes, bmw says. however, tesla is now rolling out 250-kw supercharger capability and porsche has 350-kw chargers for the taycan.

bmw has promised to have 25 hybrid and electric models in its lineup by 2023. the 2021 bmw i4 electric sedan will go on sale sometime in 2021, and we expect it to start at around $50,000.
