  • this is the next-generation nissan sentra, spied with minimal camouflage obscuring its new design.
  • with steel wheels and a six-speed manual transmission, this prototype appears to be a stripped-out base model of the new compact sedan.
  • we expect the 2020 sentra to make its official debut later this year before going on sale in early 2020.

even affordable cars these days are often festooned with big wheels, lots of chrome trim, and excessive adornments, so it can be refreshing to see a stripped-out, simple base model like this 2020 nissan sentra prototype. spied with only a bit of camouflage before its official debut, this is our first look at the u.s.-spec version of the sentra, which has already been shown overseas as the china-spec nissan sylphy.

these photos of the new sentra's exterior and interior give plenty us plenty of information about the car. its design is far less gawky than the current sentra and takes cues from the larger altima and maxima. the new sentra's interior layout is also somewhat intriguing, as it sports a nicer-looking dashboard design with three circular air vents on the dashboard and a tablet-style infotainment screen.

sprouting from the center console is a gearshift controlling a six-speed manual transmission, confirming that the sentra will continue to offer a row-your-own option in the states (a manual is currently available on the sentra's base s trim and the high-performance sentra nismo).

we'd wager that the sentra's standard engine will be a naturally aspirated inline-four, possibly the rogue sport's 2.0-liter which makes 141 horsepower, with a turbocharged engine possible as an upgrade motor. a continuously variable automatic transmission is sure to complement the six-speed stick, and the automatic will likely come standard on most of the sentra's trim levels.

look to hear more about the 2020 nissan sentra later this fall, as we expect it will make its debut before the end of the year.
