2020 Mitsubishi Mirage: Better? Probably. A Bit.

    there’s not a lot of love around here for the current mitsubishi mirage. in anticipation of its first significant facelift, let’s review some of c/d’s best slams.

    ah, the sheer joy of writing about a crummy car. but, that aside, it does mean the mirage has plenty of room for improvement. can mitsu take advantage of that potential?

    announced on mitsubishi’s worldwide media site, the information about the updated mirage comes as a preview of what will be on display at the thailand international motor expo 2019 in bangkok late next week. according to the release, “the facelift gives this compact a sharper and more dynamic exterior as well as more elegant interior designs.” the changes apply to both the vehicles known as mirage hatchback and mirage g4 which is the same vehicle with a trunk.

    what’s new starts at the nose. the freshened mirage grille isn’t as big as it initially looks, but it has a familial relationship to mitsubishi’s current crossovers like the eclipse cross. mitsubishi calls the design theme “dynamic shield” which doesn’t mean it’s made from vibranium. and there’s more predator in the face than captain america.

    the tail is revised with squarer bumper corners and l-shaped lights that span across the hind end and, mitsubishi says, make the mirage look wider and more stable. it seems unlikely that those actually make it wider and more stable, however. but who knows? there may be a miracle packed into those leds.

    in between the bow and fan tail, the mirage carries over intact. the hatch’s shape looks sort of like a baggie full of cap’n crunch crumbs. the g4 sedan is a better-balanced design. new 15-inch wheels fill out their openings better than before.

    inside, there are new armrests for leisure enthusiasts, a new meter panel for measurement fanatics, and the power window switch panel now has a “sporty carbon pattern” which should excite all those people who consider carbon sporty. upper trim models get a new seat design that features fabric synthetic leather. let us hold a moment of reverent remembrance for the synthetic cows who gave up their very hides to upholster the world’s mirages.

    alas, what doesn’t change is the 1.2-liter, three-cylinder thresher that sort of propels the thing. in the current mirage it’s rated at 78 horsepower. that’s better than 77 horsepower, but not has good as 79 horsepower. it’s likely the standard transmission will remain a five-speed manual with a continuously variable automatic available as an option.

    right now the mirage starts at $14,790 for an es hatchback. that’s cheap enough to compete with a lot of quality used cars. these superficial changes will surely make the mirage better, but mitsubishi should still commit to engineering a better machine at this price point.
