2020 Buick Encore GX Offers a Choice of Three-Cylinder Engines
  • the 2020 buick encore gx is a new crossover that's slightly larger than the standard encore.
  • it will offer two turbocharged three-cylinder engines, a base 1.2-liter with 137 hp and a more powerful 1.3-liter with 155 hp.
  • the encore gx will go on sale sometime in early 2020.

the new 2020 buick encore gx crossover is bigger than the regular encore, but its engine choices are smaller. we found out that the newest version of the encore will offer a turbocharged 1.2-liter three-cylinder as its base engine and a turbocharged 1.3-liter three-cylinder as its upgrade engine, as shown on the order guide.

the base 1.2-liter engine makes a total of 137 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque. it comes standard on all front-wheel-drive versions of the encore gx and pairs with a continuously variable automatic transmission. the more powerful 1.3-liter three-cylinder, which makes 155 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque, is optional on fwd select and essence trim levels and comes standard on every all-wheel-drive encore gx. it routes power through a nine-speed automatic transmission.

despite these engines being smaller than the standard encore's turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder, buick has kept its promise that the encore gx will offer more power than its little sibling. the gx's 1.3l option has significantly more grunt and the 1.2l beats the 1.4l's 148 lb-ft of torque, even if it falls 1 horsepower short than its 138 hp output. the standard encore did previously offer a more powerful turbocharged 1.4-liter four with 153 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque, but it was dropped from the lineup.

the encore gx measures 3 inches longer and 1.3 inch wider than the standard encore and its wheelbase is 1.6 inch longer, so it will fit somewhere between subcompact and compact on the crossover spectrum. buick hasn't released pricing for this new model yet, but it will go on sale sometime in early 2020.
