sometimes known by the nicknames brew city and the city of festivals for its plentiful breweries and annual summer fest in june and july, chicago's neighbor to the north is often overshadowed by the windy city. it's not really a fair comparison, though; chicago is chicago, but who doesn't love an afternoon spent strolling the shops and the milwaukee public market in the historic third ward? or meeting the friendly wisconsinites always quick to welcome visitors? plus, this weekend kicks off another reason to visit this great midwest metropolis: the 2019 greater milwaukee international car & truck show.
the show kicks off saturday at the wisconsin center, 400 w. wisconsin ave. in downtown wisconsin, and runs for nine days. with more than 500 vehicles from some 30 auto manufacturers, the auto show's got more cars than wisconsin's got cheese curds ... ok, maybe not quite that many, but a lot. even non-car-enthusiasts/shoppers will find plenty to do, such as an 18-hole minigolf course that benefits feeding america of eastern wisconsin and a craft beer tasting event from 7-9:30 p.m. on feb. 28 — oh, and subaru's pet adoption event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. saturdays and sundays and 4-9 p.m. thursday, where you can test-drive your new dog right there on the show floor.
the show runs through march 3; hours are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. saturdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. sundays, 3-9 p.m. monday through thursday, and noon to 9 p.m. friday. admission is $12 for adults, $9 for senior citizens age 62 or older and active or retired military members with proper i.d., and free for anyone age 16 or younger. purchase tickets online here to save $1 on adult tickets. for more info, visit the show's website.
here are five things you can't miss at the 2019 greater milwaukee international car & truck show:
1. 2020 hyundai palisade
with the unveiling of the palisade at the 2018 los angeles auto show in november, south korean automaker hyundai introduced its all-new flagship suv — a three-row, eight-seat hauler that will appear at the milwaukee auto show before it hits dealer showrooms this summer. marketed as an suv geared toward families, the palisade competes with the ford explorer, honda pilot, nissan pathfinder and toyota highlander. take the opportunity to get inside the palisade and check out family-friendly features like the suv's 16 cupholders, seven usb outlets and plentiful standard safety features like forward collision alert with pedestrian detection and lane keep assist.
"the new 2020 hyundai palisade clearly evokes design imagery worthy of hyundai's flagship suv, with new levels of all-road, all-weather capability, technology, safety, roominess and efficiency, all packaged in cutting-edge design," said mike o'brien, vice president of product, corporate and digital planning for hyundai motor america, in a statement. "this new hyundai suv is the ultimate family vehicle for practical, comfortable daily use and memory-making road trips whenever the appeal of the open road should beckon."

3. low ... ride ... er
all ... your ... friends ... know the lowrider. now you can get in the know, too, at the lowriders display at the milwaukee auto show courtesy of reyes customs, pj's garage and mexican fiesta. these colorful, customized, close-to-the-concrete cars, often outfitted with hydraulics enabling occupants to raise and lower the chassis, will be on display in all their garish glory as a healthy reminder that there's a whole contingent of cool urban auto enthusiasts out there. the collection of models from the 1980s and earlier will also feature lowrider motorcycles, and is definitely "the one to meet, yeah."
4. american icons
see a 1976 cadillac eldorado convertible — one of only 200 made to commemorate america's bicentennial — along with a pontiac trans am once owned by the late burt reynolds, and an original 1953 chevrolet corvette juxtaposed with a 2019 corvette zr1 at this display of notable american autos, at the modern american automotive history collection.
5. luxury and restored cars
gawk at how the other half lives with a fleet of high-end luxuries on display at the show. check out pricey rides from audi, bmw, jaguar, land rover, maserati, mercedes-benz and more in the luxury zone. in addition, vintage-car lovers can also enjoy a display of restored vehicles at the bennett coachworks showcase, considered to be the largest auto restoration service provider in southern wisconsin, according to show spokesperson deedee taft. bennett coachworks is expected to present a "unique 'barn finds' exhibit."
