2007-2011 Mazda CX-7, CX-9 and 2009-11 Mazda6: Recall Alert

2007-2011 Mazda CX-7, CX-9 and 2009-11 Mazda6: Recall Alert

Approximately 205,000 model-year 2007-11 Mazda CX-7 and CX-9 SUVs and model-year 2009-11 Mazda6 sedans

The Problem: Airbag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal airbag modules and used as original or replacement equipment may rupture in a crash necessitating deployment of the frontal airbags due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling. The rupture could spray metal fragments into the cabin, striking occupants and resulting in serious injury or death.

This latest action is related to the massive ongoing recall of millions of airbag inflators manufactured by Japan's Takata Corp., which have caused the deaths of 17 people worldwide. Mazda noted that the recall supersedes the previous Takata-related recall of these vehicles, and that all vehicles not remedied under that campaign are now covered by the new action.

The Fix: Dealers will replace the passenger frontal airbag inflator with an alternate inflator for free.

What Owners Should Do: Mazda began notifying owners Monday. Owners can call the automaker at 800-222-5500, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit www.safercar.gov to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
