2013 Land Rover Defender

— Land Rover recently made a couple of announcements about its future lineup, and the off-roading enthusiast in us is pleased — OK, maybe a little giddy — to report that the slate will include the two-decades-defunct Defender.

The Defender stopped production in 2016 and was last seen as a new model in the U.S. nearly 20 years ago before new safety regulations prevented the SUV from being sold here. Land Rover is currently developing the new-generation of Defender but did not yet offer other details, so we don't know exactly when it will be coming back.

The only information we could confirm is that it will be a "global vehicle." That means we get to welcome back a rugged, even more off-road-oriented Land Rover to American shores — or, more appropriately, terrains.

Land Rover also announced further plans for electrification: Every new model from Jaguar Land Rover starting in 2020 will offer an electric or hybrid drivetrain.

We're hoping to see the Defender in concept form sometime in the next year or so, which will give us more insight into what the final product will look like.
