Nissan has joined the growing list of automakers that enable owners to control certain car functions using Amazon's Alexa voice service. The new Alexa skill will be available later this month in the Amazon Skills Store, and it will let users lock and unlock their car doors, start and stop the Used Engine , honk the horn and flash the lights using voice commands.

Though the Alexa skill is a free download, an active NissanConnect Services subscription is required for it to work and it must be linked to a Nissan owner portal account. Certain voice commands, including remote start and remote locking, will also require a four-digit PIN.

Nissan says more models will be supported in the future, including the redesigned 2018 Leaf electric car. Owners of the 2011-17 Leaf will be able to use a NissanConnect EV and Services skill for Alexa to check battery status, manage charging and precondition the cabin.
