Our test CX-5 was a Grand Touring model with Soul Red Crystal Metallic paint and 19-inch alloy wheels. Its 2.5-liter four-cylinder produces 187 horsepower and 185 pounds-feet of torque; the power goes to all four wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission.

Inside, the CX-5 was decked out in parchment leather and a Premium Package, adding $1,830 for a final MSRP of $34,380 including destination. The package adds Mazda's Active Driving Display — a head-up display with stop-sign and speed-limit sign recognition — plus a memory feature for the driver's seat with two-position memory (this also saves the position of the ADD, saving drivers an additional adjustment), a six-way power passenger seat, heaters for the steering wheel and outboard rear seats, and the icing on the cake: a windshield wiper de-icer. Nice.

Be sure to return Sept. 18 when we reveal the winner of our 2017 Compact SUV Challenge, and check out the gallery of the CX-5 above.
