bmw's long lead up to its new 8 series coupe will end june 15 with the world unveiling of the production version at an event in france on the eve of this year's 24 hours of le mans. bmw motorsport also will field a pair of m8 gte racecars in the endurance competition, its first entry there since 2011.
bmw announced more than a year ago that there would be a new top-of-the-line coupe after dropping the 6 series coupe. and in may 2017, it unveiled a near-production concept version of the new 8 series coupe (see a gallery of concept photos below). the new coupe is a revival of the classic 8 series of the 1990s and will sit atop the lineup with the 7 series sedans.
with the announcement, bmw released the teaser photo, above, of the m8 gte racer with the new street coupe in the shadows of the background. the company says the street and track versions were developed together.
bmw says the new m850i xdrive will have a new v-8 used engine along with all-wheel drive, a locking rear differential and an m adaptive suspension. the car will be rolled out in global markets over the course of this year.
