Tesla Model Y Starts at $39K, But Pricier Models Will Come Out First
2020 tesla model y

suvs have been having a moment — a long one — as sales continue to soar. tesla's only suv, however, the expensive and glitchy model x, hasn't exactly capitalized on the trend. the electric automaker's all-new addition to the lineup, the model y, could be its game changer. when the smaller suv goes on sale, it'll start at around $39,000 — about $18,000 less than the model x and around $31,000 less than rival the jaguar i-pace; prices do not include destination.

tesla finally puts the (model) 3 in $35,000

that price gets you the base standard-range version, which tesla says is good for 230 miles of range. and what you see is what you get for pricing since tesla's federal tax credit is set to phase out before the model y goes on sale.

next in the lineup is the $47,000 rear-wheel-drive long-range battery model; it will be the first version produced. it has an estimated range of 300 miles, a top speed of 130 mph and purportedly can sprint from zero-to-60 mph in 5.5 seconds.

the long-range all-wheel-drive model starts at $51,000. it has an estimated range of 280 miles, a top speed of 135 miles and a zero-to-60-mph time of 4.8 seconds.

lastly, the top awd performance trim starts at $60,000 and also has an estimated range of 280 miles, but its top speed is higher at 150 mph; tesla says this model shoots from zero-to-60 mph in just 3.5 seconds.

the model y rides on the model 3's platform and shares many of the sedan's components like the batteries, electric motors and huge 15-inch touchscreen-control interface. standard equipment across the y range includes:

  • a tinted panoramic glass roof with ultraviolet and infrared protection
  • 12-way power adjustable front and rear heated seats
  • three independently folding second-row seats
  • a premium audio system with 14 speakers, a subwoofer and two amps
  • satellite-view maps with live traffic and navigation
  • in-car internet streaming music and media
  • location-aware automatic garage door opener
  • led foglamps
  • auto-dimming, power-folding, heated side mirrors
  • bluetooth music and media streaming
  • custom driver profiles
  • four usb ports
  • a host of safety features, including automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, forward and side collision warning, and blind spot warning

a host of options are available that quickly inflate prices. a third row brings seating capacity to seven and is an additional $3,000. tesla's autopilot system, which enables the car to steer, accelerate and brake automatically for other vehicles and pedestrians within its lane, also adds $3,000. building off of autopilot is the self-driving feature for an additional $5,000, which enables many autonomous capabilities such as autopark and the summon remote-control feature.

tesla says production of the long-range models will begin late 2020; the base standard-range model won't see production until 2021. since tesla seems to change its pricing as often as elon musk finds himself in controversies, check back for updates.
