confirming what it calls "one of the worst-kept secrets in the auto industry," toyota announced that we finally will see the production version of its revived-for-2020 supra sports coupe in january at the 2019 north american international auto show in detroit.

it's a stretch to even call it a secret, given that the much-awaited sports car has been seen and driven in prototype form this year and teased previously over several years. the new supra already made a debut of sorts in "production prototype form" in july at the 2018 goodwood festival of speed in england with only light camo. and later toyota made prototypes available in spain for the media to drive and report impressions.

the 2020 supra was co-developed with bmw, and shares a rear-drive platform and used engine , including bmw's turbocharged inline six-cylinder, with the 2019 bmw z4 roadster. the z4 was unveiled the past summer and goes on sale in march. you can read 's details on the new z4 here.

but the return of the z4 after just a couple of years off has made less of a splash. it lacks the cult following the supra developed in the 1980s and 1990s before it was discontinued in 2002. that rep was boosted for a younger generation by its starring role as paul walker's ride in the original "the fast and the furious" film in 2001. you can read more about the film car and earlier supras here. toyota also unveiled earlier a nascar racecar supra that will replace the camry racecar for the 2019 season.

along with the detroit debut, toyota also announced that the first global production model of the 2020 supra will be auctioned off for charity and will be delivered to the winner when production begins later next year.
