this car seat check was written in december 2016 about the 2017 genesis g90. little of substance has changed with this year's model. to see what's new for 2018, click here, or check out a side-by-side comparison of the two model years.

the 2017 genesis g90 is the first model in hyundai's luxury offshoot brand, and it's got a lot to offer a family willing to spend the roughly $70,000 on a fledgling nameplate still vying for market cachet. the five-seat flagship sedan is comfortable, luxurious and spacious — particularly in the backseat — while offering robust performance and easy-to-use tech features. while technically an all-new model, the g90 does have precedent in the hyundai equus sedan whose footprint it occupies in the rebranded lineup. the equus' 2014 version performed admirably in our car seat check, in which we made enthusiastic mention of that big backseat — but the g90 did even better.

solid

  • latch, grade a: two sets of lower latch anchors sit about a quarter-inch into the seat bight; the leather seat cushions are stiff but still easy to use.
  • infant, grade a: this seat was easy to install and left a remarkable abundance of legroom for the 5-foot-6-inch front passenger.
  • rear-facing convertible, grade a: this seat was also easy to install and the front passenger had ample legroom.
  • forward-facing convertible, grade a: our convertible seat in the forward-facing position also was easy to install once we raised the removable head restraint for a better fit, and the top tether anchors posed no difficulties.
  • booster, grade a: we also raised the head restraint for a better fit for our booster, which sat securely in the seat despite heavy bolstering and connected with ease thanks to seat belt buckles on stable stalks.

about 's car seat checks

editors jennifer geiger, jennifer newman and matt schmitz are certified child safety seat installation technicians.

for the car seat check, we use a graco snugride classic connect 30 infant-safety seat, a britax marathon convertible seat and graco turbobooster seat. the front seats are adjusted for a 6-foot driver and a shorter passenger. the three child seats are installed in the second row. the booster seat sits behind the driver's seat, and the infant and convertible seats are installed behind the front passenger seat.

we also install the forward-facing convertible in the second row's middle seat with the booster and infant seat in the outboard seats to see if three car seats will fit; a child sitting in the booster seat must be able to reach the seat belt buckle. if there's a third row, we install the booster seat and a forward-facing convertible. learn more about how we conduct our car seat checks.

parents should also remember that they can use the latch system or a seat belt to install a car seat, and that latch anchors have a weight limit of 65 pounds, including the weight of the child and the weight of the seat itself.
