Detroit-Bound 2019 Hyundai Veloster Still Funky, Still 3-Door

The redesigned 2019 Hyundai Veloster gets cleaner design cues more in keeping with the current Hyundai look, along with slightly bigger windows and a much-needed interior update. But the Veloster remains the funky, squat, three-door kinda-coupe it has been since rolling out in 2011.

That's clear in teaser photos released by Hyundai ahead of the official reveal next week in Detroit at the 2018 North American International Auto Show. They confirm what we've seen in earlier colorful camo photos (see video below), interior spy photos and uncovered exterior spy photos from a video shoot. The Veloster had an extended 2017 model year — there is no 2018 model — and the new 2019 is expected on sale by the summer.

The interior rendering shows a modern design and what appears to be nicer trim than the current Veloster's old-school Hyundai hard plastic. It also shows a "floating" media screen similar to the 2018 Elantra GT and GT Sport, which portends a significant tech update.

Still to be learned is what will make it go — and particularly if a Hyundai N Performance model is in the works for scoot that really lives up to the look and competes with hot hatches such as the Honda Civic Type R and Ford Focus RS. The base model is likely to get the 147-horsepower four-cylinder from the current Elantra, and the Veloster Turbo trim level is likely to have the 201-hp, turbocharged 1.6-liter, as well as other mechanical bits from the Elantra GT Sport (a U.S. version of the European i30).

But the cherry on top would be the 271-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, along with the chassis options, from the i30 N Performance model being offered in Europe — the opening salvo for what are expected to be N Performance sub-brand models of other Hyundais.

We'll be on the scene in Detroit when the new Veloster bows at the 2018 North American International Auto Show, so check back in with us for coverage straight from the show floor.
