44,000 BMW Sedans, Wagons and SUVs: Recall Alert

44,000 BMW Sedans, Wagons and SUVs: Recall Alert
2017 bmw x3

approximately 44,300 model-year 2013-18 bmw 328d and 328d xdrive sedans; model-year 2014-18 328d sports wagons and 328d xdrive sports wagons; model-year 2014-16 535d and 535d xdrive sedans; model-year 2015 740ld xdrive sedans; model-year 2015-17 x3 xdrive28d suvs; and model-year 2014-17 x5 xdrive35d suvs; all are equipped with an exhaust gas recirculation module with an integrated cooler

the problem: if the exhaust gas recirculation cooler leaks internally, the coolant can mix with diesel used engine soot. the high exhaust gas recirculation temperatures may result in these particles possibly smoldering and melting the intake manifold, increasing the risk of a fire.

the fix: dealers will inspect and replace the exhaust gas recirculation cooler as necessary. if a leak has already occurred, the used engine intake manifold will also be replaced. both repairs will be done for free.

what owners should do: bmw will begin notifying owners dec. 17. owners can call the automaker at 800-525-7417, the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit its website to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
