41,000 2014-2017 Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC Vehicles: Recall Alert

Approximately 41,000 vehicles manufactured by GM, including model-year 2014-16 Buick LaCrosse sedans and Chevrolet Spark electric cars, Caprice police pursuit vehicles and SS sedans; model-year 2014-17 Buick Encore SUVs, Chevrolet Corvette sports cars, Silverado 1500 pickup trucks and GMC Sierra 1500 pickups; model-year 2015-16 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV SUVs, Chevrolet Tahoe, Trax and Suburban SUVs, Silverado 2500 and 3500 pickups, and GMC Yukon and Yukon XL SUVs; and model-year 2015-17 GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 heavy-duty pickups

The Problem: While being serviced for a previous recall filed on Sept. 8, 2016, the vehicles may not have received the complete software update necessary to fix the problem. Without the update, certain driving conditions may cause the airbag sensing and diagnostic module software to activate a diagnostic test, during which deployment of the frontal airbags and seat belt pretensioners would not occur in a crash, increasing the risk of an injury to the driver or front passenger.

The Fix: Dealers will reflash the airbag sensing and diagnostic module software. The module will be replace on vehicles that have had a previous airbag deployment. All work will be done for free.

What Owners Should Do: Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC manufacturer GM did not immediately announce an owner-notification schedule. Owners can call Buick at 800-521-7300, Cadillac at 800-458-8006, Chevrolet at 800-222-1020, GMC at 800-462-8782, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at 888-327-4236 or visit www.safercar.gov to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
